The Experience Economy: Work is Theatre and Every Business a Stage

By B. Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore

Written in 1999 this book by Pine and Gilmore was visionary in seeing how the 21st century would begin the new economy with demands for new models for work.  These authors clearly saw the shift from the service economy to the experience economy, emphasizing that every business is a stage and therefore, work is theatre.  They address not only the moral emphasis on what kinds of experience will be stages, but also provide the tools that guide you to staging compelling experiences and transform your business into a truly valuable experience for your clients.  I totally agree with the quote on page 77, “Companies should charge for the value they add, not the cost they incur.”
